Beware: Camp Lejeune Toxic Water Scams on the Rise

It wasn’t long after the Camp Lejeune Justice Act was signed into law that nefarious individuals and groups started working to swindle claimants out of money. Unfortunately, these scammers are targeting veterans and their families, promising Camp Lejeune toxic water settlement checks if only they send in some money to get the process started. This is NOT how the process works!

What to Watch Out For

As of November 2022, no settlements have been offered by the government. Therefore, there are no settlement checks available. Do not trust anyone who says they have a check waiting for you and do not send them money.

The Veteran’s Administration is a branch of the federal government – the federal government is not suing itself. The VA does not and cannot file injury claims on your behalf under the Camp Lejeune Justice Act. Do not believe anyone who says the VA can file an injury claim on your behalf or that it can represent you in your legal claim.

The Laws are clear:

  • The Veteran’s Administration is an arm of the government tasked with providing healthcare services to eligible military veterans.
  • The PACT Act expands eligibility for care and benefits for veterans related to toxic exposure.
  • The Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022 creates a whole new pathway for veterans and their families exposed to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune to seek compensation that is separate from the health care benefits offered by the VA.
